Electrical and property dataset for Fort Collins
Electrical and property dataset for Fort Collins
In 2016, Colorado State University (CSU) signed a data sharing agreement with the Fort Collins Utilities (FCU), wherein the FCU provides CSU significant electrical system data for research purposes. Data provided from FCU to CSU includes: • Detailed electrical system topology data for the complete Fort Collins electric grid, which includes 7 substations, 77 feeders, more than 900 miles of transmission lines, more than 8000 transformers, and more than 75,000 premises. Premises include all FCU customers, with approximately 66,000 residential customers and 8,000 commercial customers. This topology data includes connectivity data, asset configurations, phase connections, etc., enough to perform detailed power flow analyses on every feeder in the city. • Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) data that provides 15-minute energy consumption for every premise from 2015 to present. This data is updated quarterly. • Data on all Solar Power / PhotoVoltaic (PV) assets installed in the city, premise ID, rated capacity, and date of install. This data covers residential rooftop systems, community solar, and commercial solar installations. • Linking information that describes Larimer County parcel information for each premise, and GIS coordinates (latitude, longitude) for all premises and physical electrical assets. In addition to the above data, CSU has integrated the following public data sets: • Larimer County property records. This data includes address, assessed values for each property, and data for all buildings on the properties (square footage, commercial / residential usage, HVAC type, etc.). • Larimer County voter registration records, listing each voter, party affiliation, and address. • U.S. Census Block data, which provides links to demographic data (race, age, sex) at the census block level, and income at the census block group level. By merging and curating these datasets, CSU has a comprehensive database of actual electricity usage in the city of Fort Collins.
Key Highlights
1. Electrical system topology data completely describing all the feeders in the city – over 80 at current count. Detail of this data is sufficient to run advanced power flow simulations.
2. Five years of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) data for every premise in the city, both residential and commercial.
3. Links into the Larimer County property database that provide building stock data for each of the 75,000 premises.
Technical Details
The data is stored in a postgres database, with significant attention payed to efficient queries for the > 11 billion AMI data records.
All data received from the Fort Collins Utilities has been made available under Non-Disclosure Agreements.
