Single Year Snapshot
North America

The MPO dataset started recording MPOs in 2016 with MPO website observations (overall page, minutes, and federal documents) as well as human interaction if variables were not found. From observing regional organization literature, observing MPOs on a nationwide scale is rather sparse compared to state level or even small regional areas. The database observes MPO within all 50 states as well as a supplemental database containing the Integrated City Sustainability Database (ICSD) in regards to city data linkages to its representative MPO. The database can be used to observe the institutional capacity and arrangement of MPOs to see if there are possible significant effects from in regards voting representation, staffing, and committee forming in relation to sustainable factors such as environmental sustainable goal adoption and implementation. There are a total of 403 current MPOs in the dataset.

Key Highlights
  • 1. Large Dataset containing Institutional Capacity/Constraints/Organization variables from all MPOs within the United States

  • 2. MPO Data derived from Website, Email, and Phone Contact while building from 2016-2018

  • 3. Secondary Database linked to ICSD connected the majority of ICSD cities to MPOs formed before 2011.

Uses and Visualizations

Using Survey Data from the ICSD, cities are used as a unit of analysis to observe city choices to a survey question and measured based on MPO variables as well as city variables

Technical Details

The data is currently stored via several ways. There is 1) a combined dataset of MPO matched with ICSD cities, which includes all variables mentioned combined with all imputed ICSD data. 2) A full .XLS file of all MPOs within the United States and the data recorded with each. 3) Another .XLS file showing all MPOs within the United States and the website to find said MPO (Collected from the Department of Transportation website).
